12 Cheap Weekend and Day-Trip Getaways In/Around Nairobi

Looking for getaways that are budget-friendly and in/within the environments of Nairobi? Maybe for camping trips, game drives, romantic getaways or simple day trips, here are some amazing places you should consider:

1. Nairobi National Park

Nairobi is the only capital city in the world that has a national park inside it and it’s just a short drive from the city center. The park offers panoramic views of wide-open savannah grass plains, a backdrop of the tall city buildings and scattered acacia bush is home to a variety of wildlife like giraffes, monkeys, deers, buffalos, antelopes and many others. The park also has picnic and campsites.

2. Giraffe Center

Just 5 km from the Nairobi city center and next to Nairobi National Park, sits Giraffe Centre. The center located on the lush grounds of Giraffe Manor makes for a good day-trip spot. Here, visitors can see and feed the endangered Rothschild’s giraffes as they stand on a raised platform. The friendly giraffes also make for great photo-ops as they are generous with ‘giraffe kisses.’ Other animals in the Centre are warthogs and hares.

3. David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

At the main gates of Nairobi National Park, this orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program is a must-see for animal lovers. The center cares for young abandoned elephants and rhinos and works to release the animals back into the wild. You can commune with these lovable creatures as they play in the mud and drink from giant baby bottles

4. Banana Farmhouse, Kiambu

This makes for a lovely hideaway to escape Nairobi for a short while. Boasting of lush green lawns,  with shades of Jacaranda and Acacias, it can easily be your weekend oasis. Your hosts will be Juliah and Phil. Here visitors can enjoy golfing, swimming, walking trails, leisure viewing of Ngong hills and even better, pure relaxing!

5. Paradise Lost

Paradise Lost is a clean and well-maintained park found in the fresh greenery of Kiambu. Visitors can enjoy camping, boat riding, cave viewing, waterfall viewing, nature trails, horse and camel ridings. It is also an ideal picnic spot.

6. Tigoni Waterfalls

Tigoni waterfalls is a peaceful rustic paradise, just half an hour away from urban life. Located at the top of a quiet and serene green tea farm of Kiambethu, it has stunning views of tea farms in the area. It is also home to a secluded 18m waterfall. It is ideal for picnics, camping and a weekend getaway from Nairobi.

7. Rapid’s Camp Sagana

Visitors can enjoy rafting/kayaking, water sports, picnics, and camping here. Rapid’s Camp Sagana is easily accessed from the Thika Super Highway.

8. Acacia Camp

Acacia camp is a huge hidden gem on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway located less than an hour’s drive from Nairobi. Visitors can enjoy camping near the dams/lakes, fishing, game drives, and racing. Brace yourself to be surprised by the wildlife that casually walks by your tents in the morning to have a drink. You will see zebras, wilder beasts, giraffes and a few hyenas.

9. Olepolos

Olepolos Country Club is a quick getaway spot located just 28km from Nairobi center. It’s famous for its traditional nyama choma and breathtaking views, and friendly local Maasai people.

10. Ol Talet Cottages

Located about 40kms from Nairobi and near ole polos, this is a serene spot to hide away from urban life with your loved ones. The best part of this place is the bathroom while taking a hot shower, you can enjoy a wide 170 degrees view enjoy and admire Africa!

11. Karura Forest

If you generally like outdoors and nature, this is the perfect spot for you. The forest located within Nairobi has over 50kms of nature trails for walking, running and cycling. You can also play tennis in the tennis courts. It is also home to over 200 species of birds and a variety of animals like monkeys, baboons, porcupines, squirrels, rabbits, and a few others.

12. Amboseli National Park

Located in Kiambu County and only 2 hours drive from Nairobi, Amboseli National Park is the 2nd most famous national park in Kenya after the Maasai Mara. The park is famous for its large herds of elephants with gorgeous views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
