Lamu Island

Welcome to Lamu Island

Lamu Island is unlike anywhere else in Kenya. A UNESCO World Heritage Site off the northern coast, Lamu Old Town is one of the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlements in East Africa, with winding coral-stone alleyways, carved wooden doors, and a pace of life that has barely changed in centuries. There are no cars – only donkeys and boats.

Sail on a hand-carved dhow at sunset, snorkel the pristine reefs of Manda Island, or simply lose yourself in the narrow streets of the Old Town where Arab, Indian, and African cultures blend seamlessly. The annual Lamu Cultural Festival and Lamu Yoga Festival draw visitors from around the world. Shela Beach offers a long sweep of quiet white sand backed by the dunes. Lamu is the perfect off-the-beaten-track supplement to any Kenya safari or coastal holiday.
