Samburu National Reserve is one of Kenya's most captivating safari destinations, tucked away in the semi-arid north along the Ewaso Nyiro River. Unlike the southern parks, Samburu is home to a unique set of wildlife species found nowhere else in Kenya – the celebrated Special Five – making it an essential destination for serious wildlife enthusiasts.
The Special Five – Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Somali ostrich, and beisa oryx – draw photographers and naturalists from around the world. Beyond these rarities, Samburu also supports healthy populations of elephant, lion, leopard, and cheetah. The rugged landscape of acacia scrub and rocky outcrops, cut by the river, creates dramatic scenery and excellent predator sightings. Often combined with a Laikipia conservancy stay for the ultimate northern Kenya circuit.
