If you only have two days to spare but still want a proper taste of the Kenyan bush, Amboseli is the park that delivers the most for the least amount of driving. It sits about four to five hours from Nairobi, and it is best known for two things - some of the largest free-roaming elephant herds left in Africa, and clear morning views of Mount Kilimanjaro rising just across the border in Tanzania. You will not see the sheer volume of predators you would find in the Mara, but the trade-off is a compact park where two well-timed game drives can genuinely feel like enough.
This is a private safari, meaning the vehicle, driver guide, and schedule are yours alone - no waiting on other travelers, no fixed group pace. It works well as a weekend safari for people flying into Nairobi with limited time, as a first safari for someone testing the waters before a longer trip, or as a quick add-on before or after a coastal holiday.
The dry months from June to October give the clearest skies and the best chance of an unobstructed view of Kilimanjaro, along with easier wildlife spotting as animals gather near the remaining water sources. That said, Amboseli rewards visitors year-round - even during the shoulder seasons, the elephant herds are reliably present.
Your driver guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel or from the airport at around 7:00 AM. After a short briefing on the route and what to expect, you will head southeast toward the Tanzanian border, with a stop along the way to stretch your legs and take in the Rift Valley scenery. You will reach camp in time for lunch, then rest for an hour or two before heading out for your first game drive from around 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM. This is usually when elephant herds move toward water, so keep your camera close. Dinner and overnight stay at a tented camp inside or bordering the park.
You will be up early for a packed breakfast and back in the park by around 6:30 AM, when the light is best and Kilimanjaro's peak is most likely to be free of cloud cover. The morning game drive runs until about 11:00 AM, after which you will exit the park, stop for lunch on the way, and arrive back in Nairobi by around 4:00 PM, where you will be dropped at your hotel or the airport.
Pricing depends on group size, starting from $650 for solo travelers and dropping to $290 per person for groups of four or more. The rate covers transport, accommodation, meals, and park fees.
Yes. Amboseli is compact compared to parks like the Masai Mara, so two well-timed game drives (one afternoon, one early morning) give you a strong chance of seeing elephant herds, Mount Kilimanjaro, and most of the park's other wildlife.
Early morning, before clouds build up around the peak. Most game drives on day two are timed to catch this window.
